Kate Hudson would wear all of these in Almost Famous.

Almost Famous is a movie, but it might as well be an adjective. The shearling Penny Lane coat Kate Hudson wears throughout the film basically has top billing, and when I found my dream shearling coat on Etsy recently, the description read, "Shearling-lined Penny Lane dream from the '70s—very Almost Famous." Whenever I step outside wearing it, someone tells me I'm "giving Kate Hudson as Penny Lane," even though I look nothing like Kate Hudson. Shearling coats just have that kind of transformative star power that instantly passes on to whoever wears them.

Wil Beedle, founder of Shoreditch Ski Club, agrees, and that's actually why he decided to focus his brand on shearling coats. "There's just such a tactility to them, which means they can be transformed into the most beautiful sculptural shapes that maintain their depth and richness," he tells me over email. "They also have a kind of transformational quality, which, unlike many jackets, means you can throw them on with jogging bottoms and slides, and still look super chic."

The name of his brand is a nod to the shearling coat's versatility: You can just as easily wear one on the slopes as you can on the streets of Shoreditch. "We see people in many different settings wearing them in all sorts of different ways—layered up like a cocoon in Aspen, or slouching round the city paired with cashmere pants for that high-low dressing vibe," he says. "It all works, that's the beauty."

The shearling coat is also one of the only coats out there that people wear regardless of the weather. Sure, it keeps you warm, but most importantly, it makes you look cool—like you could be a rock star girlfriend, evidently. Though there are plenty of options to choose from, Beedle suggests looking at the cut and materiality when making a decision. "Like everything else, there are enough shearling jackets in the world already," he says. "So to justify making a new one, it has be something that hasn't been done before—whether that's the way it's tanned and color-blocked or the way it's cut."

Finding a shearling coat reminiscent of Hudson's in Almost Famous is a worthy goal, but there are also plenty of shearling coats in fashion history that are just as inspiration worthy, like those made by Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga or Margiela for Hermès. And, of course, there are plenty of new brands like Saks Potts, Stand Studio, and Shoreditch Ski Club that are making the classic coat go viral in 2023. Shop our 17 favorites below.

There are two types of shearling jackets: those that are all-over shearling and those lined in shearling. This Shoreditch Ski Club jacket is reversible, so it can actually be both. It's basically two shearling jackets in one.

Size Range: XS to L

If you like the idea of a reversible jacket but want a longer option, Stand Studio's sandy faux-shearling Samira jacket is the perfect fit. The best detail is no doubt the pointed collar, which adds some unexpected polish to the look.

Size Range: XXXS to L

Matthieu Blazy's Bottega debut brought a lot of texture. While everyone (still) can't stop talking about the leather pants that look like denim, I'd argue this ultra-luxe shearling coat specked with gold-tone hardware is just as incredible.

Size Range: XS to L

While most shearling jackets are ideal for snuggling up during freezing temps, this Lauren Ralph Lauren velvety faux-suede and shearling jacket provides a lighter option for the tricky transitional period between winter and spring.

Size Range: XS to XL

Sandy Liang is known for her signature fleeces, but her shearling jackets deserve more time in the limelight. This reversible lambskin shearling coat is a Sandy Liang x Ssense exclusive you won't find anywhere else—and the purple color gives it a distinct playfulness that has become Liang's signature.

Size Range: XXS to XL

Couldn't get your hands on the UGG ultra-platform boots Bella Hadid made trend a couple months ago? Consider filling the UGG-shaped hole in your closet with this faux-shearling coat instead. It's far more timeless but still looks like something Miss Hadid would wear.

Size Range: XS to XL

Khaite's Shellar leather and lambskin shearling jacket has that retro look that feels reminiscent to the shearling-collar coat Marlon Brando famously wore in On the Waterfront. But the balloon sleeves and oversize fit give it the feminine modern flair Catherine Holstein is known for. Actress Laura Harrier gets it: She took an Instagram selfie wearing the coat in black with the caption "cozy."

Size Range: S to L

Saks Potts is to blame for bringing back the Penny Lane coat craze. The brand's signature foxy leather coat propelled the brand into the mainstream a couple years ago, but it's one of the only majorly trendy street style pieces that has stood the test of time. Regardless of its It-girl status, the coat is more than just a moment: Its shearling cuff and collar details plus waist-cinching pink buckle belt make it an instant classic.

Size Range: S to L

Topshop's extra-fluffy faux-shearling coat is a Nordstrom shopper favorite. Reviewers praise the chunky coat for its accessible price point and luxe look. One writes, "It's warm and not boxy and a great price for a long faux-shearling coat. I wear size Small and the 6 fit best—I'm 5'10" and the length is good. Get it while you can!"

Size Range: US 2 to US 10

Miu Miu's Nappa Leather Jacket has a removable shearling collar, which means you can easily wear this piece year-round on balmy summer nights and warmer winter days. And if you're not convinced of its style prowess, look no further than Emma Corrin in the fall campaign. She wore the jacket styled in the most off-kilter Miu Miu way: with little leather shorts held up by not one but two belts, and a pair of the Miu Miu multi-buckle moto boots social media can't stop obsessing over.

Size Range: FR 36 to FR 50

Acne Studio's leather shearling buckle jacket has become one of the brand's best-selling items, and is produced season after season. But if you want something just as warm that feels a little different, this cropped shearling jacket by the brand is it. The bright orange cuff and collar add an unexpected color pop to the silhouette, and the self-tie closure makes it easy to wear undone to show off your under-coat styling.

Size Range: FR 32 to FR 42

While Acne Studios' shearling jacket feels a little different, Y/Project's snap-panel faux-shearling jacket truly feels unconventional. The funnel neck eliminates the need for a scarf, and the detachable panels with press-stud fastenings mean you can change the design of the coat every time you wear it.

Size Range: XXS to XXL

Mango's faux shearling-lined coat comes in the brightest blue that makes it stand out against the standard black leather alternative. Just be prepared for everyone to stop you and ask where it's from when you wear this out.

Size Range: XS to XL

Loro Piana has basically become a synonym for luxury. This Capp Credence Coat is made of soft shearling and oozes elegance. The family-run company has a textile mill that produces some of the rarest and softest cashmere and wool in the world—so you already know this is going to feel like a cloud you can wear.

Size Range: IT 36 to IT 44

Stand Studio's coats are favorites among the social media crowd. The olive green and pastel pink of this faux-shearling coat is a so-wrong-it's-right color combination TikTok won't allow you to gate-keep. Although, maybe you should until it's safely in your cart—it's currently on sale at Nordstrom and will be sold out before you know it.

Size Range: FR 32 to FR 44

Marine Serre's double-breasted leather shearling coat feels straight out of the '90s. It's also made from deadstock lambskin, for those who want to invest in a coat that's more sustainable. The removable blue-hued shearling collar and cuffs make this coat versatile, while the all-over crescent moon print details make it undeniably Marine Serre.

Size Range: XXXS to XXL

What kind of shearling coat do you wear in the middle of a lavender field in the South of France? Obviously one by Jacquemus. This La Veste Piloni Cropped Shearling Jacket has that Simon Porte Jacquemus je ne sais quoi, and the shearling collar drapes over the back like a fuzzy sailor collar.Size Range: FR 32 to FR 46
