Why is quiet luxury taking over celebrity fashion?

Dec 27, 2023

Out with garish logo bags, ostentatious jewelry and dramatically ruffled ball gowns. It's time for quiet luxury. From now on, fashion is redefining the rules for the "ultra-rich" and promoting simplicity and minimalism, or the opposite of flashy aesthetics. Several fashionable girls have already embraced the trend, including Kylie Jenner and the Olsen twins.

It all started in early 2023, when Gwyneth Paltrow went to court following a skiing accident in 2016, with a man accusing her of injuring him at a Utah resort. Each day, the Oscar-winning star attended the trial dressed in elegant yet understated outfits, all from leading fashion houses and designers such as The Row, Prada and Ralph Lauren.

It didn't like long for other celebrities to copy the quiet luxury trend, also known as courtcore. The latest to adopt it is Kylie Jenner who, on a trip to Paris, wore a series of extremely simple outfits, cultivating a more tidy fashion image. She showed restraint with a subtly low-cut black Bottega Veneta dress, which she elevated with a Sardine Leather Tote Bag, also from the Italian fashion house, as well as a pair of Lanvin pumps.

She was also spotted in a very schoolgirl Maximilian Davis outfit–easily evoking images of Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl–consisting of a micro skirt and double-breasted jacket, as well as in a black strapless dress in sober leather by Ludovic de Saint Sernin from the Spring-Summer 2023 collection.

Fashion houses are also following the quiet luxury trend. Each season, brands and designers such as Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta, Khaite and The Row, for example, have been mapping out a new radical, understated fashion: tailored jackets, well-cut denim skirts, immaculate tank tops, plain trench coats, loafers... The guiding principal, overall? Don't overdo it. Focus on quality pieces, impeccable cuts and refined details. With all this, it's a safe bet that this trend will become the most popular of the year.
